There are many simple yet effective ways to insulate your home or business, but few offer as an effective insulation solution as cellulose fibre.

Eco-Insulation’s cellulose fibre is one of the best and most cost-effective insulation products available in the South African market, helping you to keep the outside temperature out and the inside temperature in! Insulate above your ceiling and you are guaranteed to save energy, which means less electricity or gas usage and therefore real savings in your pocket.

Cellulose fibre insulation

Cellulose fibre insulation is a cost effective, environmentally friendly thermal insulation material manufactured in South Africa from recycled newspapers. The paper is shredded and natural inorganic salts added for resistance to fire, mould, insects and vermin. The final product does a great job of keeping buildings warm in winter and cool in summer, and can be blown into voids often inaccessible with traditional insulations to achieve an exceptional air-tightness.

Eco-Insulation’s cellulose fibre ceiling insulation is milled to an optimum density to adhere to international standards, and is locally approved for use in buildings by the SABS. Based on the insulation product specification for each of the country’s six Climatic Zones as designated by the South African National Standard (SANS 10400-XA) relating to buildings. Our insulation solution offers a hard to beat combination of R-values with exceptional thermal performance and 100% coverage of the area being treated.

Pneumatically pumped into the ceiling cavity by professional installers, Eco-Insulation offers a sustainable, green solution to the client. It is an acclaimed energy efficient solution for the home, office or industrial building.

How does cellulose insulation work?
In the summer months, the hot African sun can cause temperatures inside the attic area of the roof to become a virtual oven, often reaching temperatures of up to 60 degrees Celsius. This heat is transferred through the ceiling into your home or working environment making the living or working spaces unbearably hot, causing the occupants headaches, diminished concentration, irritation and discomfort. During the freezing winter months, heat generated inside using electric heaters, gas heaters or even a fireplace, escapes quickly once the source of the heat is extinguished. To stop the downward heat flow in summer and upward heat loss in winter you need to insulate your ceiling. Using cellulose fibre insulation can reduce the upward heat loss by up to 89% and downward heat flow up to 86%. The ceilings of any building are full of odd shaped cavities and obstacles like plumbing, air ducts and wiring. For insulation to work effectively, it must completely fill around these obstructions without gaps and voids. For this reason, loose fill cellulose insulation material is pneumatically pumped/blown into the ceiling roof cavity by professional installers, creating a layer of insulated cover conforming to your home or office and surrounding you and your family or your workers with a seamless insulation system. Because Eco-Insulation’s cellulose fibre is machine blown it offers a greater R-value performance than many other fibrous insulations. Its higher density and perfect fit dramatically reduce air leakage and air convection, while significantly helping to reduce noise in the building. Eco-Insulation is a tested and field proven insulation product. Research on cellulose insulation has shown that air leakage through the ceilings is reduced because cellulose has a better and natural ability to “tighten” the building by filling in small, hard to reach cavities and irregular surfaces.
Benefits

In nearly all cases, cellulose fibre insulation is the:

  • Most effective and safest
  • Most cost efficient, and affordable
  • Most environmentally positive insulation

Superior thermal and air coverage

There’s no question that cellulose fibre insulation provides the best thermal performance by preventing radiant, conductive and convective heat loss. It fits snuggly into tight corners and around roofing members and pipes, which means fewer air pockets can form making it harder for heat to escape, thus minimizing air-leakage and infiltration, greatly reducing heat loss and convective air currents in the process.

Excellent acoustical performance

The key to sound control is density and no voids. Many conventional insulations are lightweight and do not offer an effective sound barrier, cellulose fibre insulation on the other hand delivers excellent noise suppression in ceilings and timber floors.

Built-in fire protection

Cellulose insulation dominates this important attribute. When exposed to flame many conventional insulations quickly melt, allowing fire to spread. Foam and some fibrous insulations burn quickly releasing toxic gases. Few conventional insulations can deliver an effective fire retardant protection like cellulose fibre.

Enhanced insect and rodent resistance

Cellulose fibre insulation is treated with inorganic salts, which increases not only fire resistance but inhibits mould growth and is unfriendly to insects. Cellulose fibre is composed of a myriad of tiny fibres, these fibres become trapped in the fur of rodents which they find irritating and therefore discourages them from nesting in the insulation.

Environmental benefits

Cellulose fibre is made from a recycled waste stream that would ordinarily end up in landfills. Using cellulose insulation is also more environmentally friendly compared with many other types of insulation as it’s made from clean recycled elements using a low-embodied energy process. Carbon footprint is further reduced as cellulose fibre aids in reducing electricity costs and traps heat in a structure that would ordinarily be lost into the atmosphere. Eco-Insulation is one of the only insulating materials to be fully biodegradable.

Save money & energy

A properly insulated building ensures a noticeable decrease in the amount of energy required to cool and warm your home resulting in lower utility bills. Savings achieved with cellulose fibre insulation can be considerable and the payback period on the cost of installing insulation quickly recovered.

Higher performance value

The material compaction and product density will often outperform many other fibrous insulations without a doubt. Due to the installation method, 100% coverage of the ceiling area is achieved, minimizing hot spots where heat may be gained or lost. Cellulose fibre insulation is also non-corrosive to steel and copper piping found in your ceiling.

Cost saving

In addition to aiding to reduce your heating and cooling costs, cellulose fibre is generally less expensive to install than most other fibrous insulations on the market. It is also installed in a fraction of the time.

Installation

Eco-Insulation offers a turnkey service i.e. we both supply & install the insulation. Our product solution is delivered to site in our dedicated vehicles, it is then pneumatically pumped into the ceiling cavity by our own installation teams using our own specialised equipment. Installation is quick and efficient; depending on your roofing type, installation is done either through the trapdoor or through the roof.  Typically, a three-bedroom home is fully installed in three to four hours (see our video of a standard home installation).

Application

Eco-Insulation’s solution can be used in a standard pitched roof, and it is often also installed in cathedral ceilings and flat steel roofs, as well as in timber floors and dry walls for acoustic dampening; speak to one of our consultants for a free onsite evaluation and quotation.

Guarantee

Eco-Insulation’s product is manufactured to international specification and enjoys accreditation to the SABS’s SANS 1381-6 specification for Thermal Insulation in Buildings. The product is also tested and certified in accordance with the SANS 428 fire specification and is rated B/B1/2 (no spread of flame). Eco-Insulation is a member of TIPSASA, the Thermal Insulation Products & Systems Association of South Africa and has received a PCC, Product Compliance Certificate. Eco-Insulation, apart from being a recognisably endorsed “green building product”, has further received prestigious awards such as the Excellence Award from the SAEE, South African Energy Efficiency Association and the National Productivity Institute.

Did you know that Eco-Insulation was selected by highly qualified engineers above other products as the solution of choice in the energy efficiency project at SALT, the South African Large Telescope and the South African Astronomical Observatory complexes in Sutherland of the Karoo, Northern Cape – an extreme climate indeed! This project has received considerable publicity because a 20% saving in energy cost was achieved in a severe and hostile climate. Eco-Insulation was an Energy Saving Project finalist at the SAEE Awards in 2011.
